16th Bay of Plenty Rapid 2021

16th Bay of Plenty Rapid 2021 was successfully held on Saturday 27th February 2021. A record matching 66 players enjoyed this popular chess event that is the first and longest running 25 minutes plus 5 seconds Rapid time control. This one day Rapid tournament turned out to be “A Chess Sanctuary” in light of New Zealand being plunged into COVID-19 lockdown from 6am Sunday, the very next day.

Kudos for the Bay of Plenty Rapid’s continuous long running success goes to the organising clubs. This event is a joint effort of the only two chess clubs still operating in the Western Bay of Plenty, Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club and Tauranga Chess Club.

After 6 rounds of games, FM Alphaeus Ang from Auckland was the champion. Nunilon III Fulo from Rotorua (Eastern Bay of Plenty) was a close 2nd equal by half a point behind and won Best Bay of Plenty Player.
