New Zealand Junior Championships 2020 incorporates the following tournaments:

  • NZ Junior Rapid, New Zealand Junior Rapid Chess Championship. 26th September 2020.
  • NZ Junior Blitz, New Zealand Junior Blitz Chess Championship. 27th September 2020.
  • NZ Junior Championship, New Zealand Junior Chess Championship. 27th September to 1st October 2020.

Auckland Chess Centre, 17 Cromwell Street, Mount Eden, Auckland.

Eligibility

Players must be under the age of 20 before 1st January 2020 (born after the year 1999).

Non-NZL players must have FIDE ID issued by their chess federation.

NZL players without FIDE ID must provide full Date of Birth.

Only first 50 fully paid player entries accepted due to space constraints.

The organiser reserves the right to increase player numbers.

Format

NZ Junior Championship is a swiss of 9 rounds.

NZ Junior Rapid is a swiss of 6 rounds.

NZ Junior Blitz is a swiss of 9 rounds.

All tournaments will be FIDE and NZCF rated where possible.

Time Controls

NZ Junior Championship: Standard, 90 minutes per player with 30 seconds increment per move for all moves.

NZ Junior Rapid: Rapid, 25 minutes per player with 5 seconds increment per move for all moves.

NZ Junior Blitz: Blitz, 3 minutes per player with 5 seconds increment per move for all moves.

Schedule

New Zealand Junior Championships tournaments are scheduled to maximise use of the weekend and avoid peak commuting traffic on weekdays. The NZ Junior Rapid on Saturday 26th September 2020 and NZ Junior Blitz on Sunday morning 27th September 2020 allows for those who can only play on a weekend. The NZ Junior Championship is scheduled to start on Sunday evening 27th September 2020 and end Thursday evening 1st October 2020. The schedule is packed to minimise wasted time and to leave Friday 2nd October 2020 free for potential travel to the South Island Championship.

Trophies and Titles

1st (equal) in NZ Junior Championship would be titled “New Zealand Junior Chess Champion” with name engraved on the New Zealand Junior Chess Championship trophy and receive a certificate.

1st (equal) in NZ Junior Rapid would be titled “New Zealand Junior Rapid Chess Champion” with name engraved on the Gary L Judkins “Wooden Rook” trophy and receive a certificate.

1st (equal) in NZ Junior Blitz would be titled “New Zealand Junior Blitz Chess Champion” and receive a certificate.

Every champion, 1st (equal) in a group, would receive the appropriate title and certificate.

  1. Players eligible for New Zealand trophies or titles must be registered by FIDE as NZL.
  2. Age groups are allocated in bands, eg. U14 is under14 and above12.
  3. Players can win more than one title, but only one cash prize.
  4. Cash prizes are subject to a minimum of 3 entrants in each group.
    Players from a lower group with less than 3 entrants will be merged with players from a higher group. The lower group’s cash prize is forfeited but age group title will still be awarded to an eligible player.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • No player may claim more than one cash prize per tournament.
  • Cash prizes will be determined by tiebreaks.

Players eligible for multiple cash prizes would receive the highest monetary value prize.

  • Tiebreaks utilised for cash prizes for swiss tournaments are calculated by Vega in the following descending order:
    1. Direct Encouter
    2. Cumulative
    3. Buchholz Total
    4. Sonneborn-Berger
    5. Buchholz Cut 1
  • If all tiebreaks fail, the tie shall be broken by drawing of lots.
