Auckland Chess Weekends 2024

Auckland Chess Weekends 2024 are a series of 5 over-the-board (OTB) chess tournaments with 6 rounds played over 2 days on a weekend.

Auckland Chess Centre (ACC) is having a series of OTB tournaments to be run throughout 2024, the Auckland Chess Weekends (ACW). These tournaments will fill the gaps between months with long weekends when big open tournaments are traditionally run. The main differences are:

  • ACW events take only two days, just a normal weekend, and you can leave long weekends for bigger plans such as traveling.
  • ACW events are played in a slightly faster time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds increment, which is still considered classical by FIDE.
  • unrated players in ACW events will not have to play each other, which provides an opportunity for more players to get FIDE-rated quicker.

This means almost every month you’d be able to find a FIDE rated classical OTB event played over a weekend at ACC. In months when ACW is not held there are the, Auckland Anniversary Weekender in January, Auckland Waitangi Weekender in February, Auckland ANZAC Weekender in April, Merv Morrison Memorial in October.

In 2024, ACC is also organising a series of combined Blitz and Rapid weekend events that are FIDE rated (Blitz and Rapid) too. Check out the Auckland Blitz Rapid (ABR) series.

Auckland Chess Weekends 2024 are a series of 5 separate chess tournaments of 6 rounds each. Each tournament is played at a pace of 3 rounds per day over 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) in a weekend.

Players must be rated under 2400 standard FIDE, or be unrated to be eligible to participate in a tournament. Rating ceiling is enforced on a per tournament basis, a player’s eligibility is reinstated if their rating falls below the ceiling in the month of a tournament.

Players who do not have FIDE standard (classical) ratings would not be paired with each other where possible. This is to make it easier for unrated players to earn their initial ratings.

Main purpose of the Auckland Chess Weekends is to provide chess players more opportunities to play standard time control games over the board. Players who play in every tournament in ACW 2024 series would play up to 30 OTB chess games.
