NZCF AGM 2025 remit by Auckland Chess Centre to remove voting cap and simplify vote calculation for full proportional representation.

Proportional Representation in NZCF

Proportional Representation in NZCF

Regaining full proportional representation in NZCF (New Zealand Chess Federation) is the goal of the NZCF AGM 2025 remit by Auckland Chess Centre to “Remove voting cap and simplify vote calculation“.

3rd March 2025

Greetings fellow chessplayers,

My name is Bruce Wheeler and I am President of the Auckland Chess Centre.

I am writing to you to ask for your clubs’ votes to support the ACC’s motion to reform the NZCF’s voting system.

In 2019 changes were made to the NZCF voting system by the introduction of a vote cap per club. I believe this was done to ensure that the ACC and the North Shore Chess Club never receive fair democratic voting rights and it is being very good at doing this. Our proposal is simple and democratic, one registered member equals one vote.

Please vote for the ACC’s motion to reform the NZCF’s voting system.

Please do not vote to retain the current system which is I believe, Corrupt.

Reasons

NZCF is currently controlled by people from clubs whose members make up the minority of chess players in New Zealand. Clubs that grow to have more than 60 members find that there are practically only costs and no gains to having more members. However chess players are compelled to join chess clubs or get prosecuted by NZCF. Clubs in major population centers are effectively forced to accept large numbers of members. Leading to the majority of chess players paying the bulk of NZCF’s revenue while having little democratic control over NZCF’s policy direction.

This remit would result in NZCF:

  • Having an easy to understand voting system.
  • Fair to all clubs and members regardless of location.
  • Widely responsive to policy changes.
  • Marginalised clubs and members would be valued.
  • Incentive is provided to induce all views to a common ground as all now effectively count.

Restoring proportional representation in NZCF through this remit would let chess players regain democratic control over NZCF.
