Dear Chess Players
As you are all aware there are a few confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand and we are all receiving commentary on social and other media of a growing number of other cases (some of which are not confirmed) in Auckland.
Following the Prime Minister’s directive on travellers entering New Zealand requiring self-isolation, a number of overseas titled players have been forced to withdraw from our event.
Entries for our tournament are slightly down on last year, as players no doubt assess the current situation.
This period continues to be an uncertain and unprecedented time for sports, including chess – with a number of popular annual events being cancelled or postponed.
However, the health of club members, tournament officials and all chess players and their families is our priority.
Our team has therefore made the decision to postpone this year’s event. We hope to advise a new date for our tournament in due course.
We would appreciate any help in advising players of this decision (Helen Milligan and Stan Yee will no doubt post something on social media) and on behalf of Howick Chess Club I would like to thank everyone for their support and understanding during this uncertain time.

Grandmasters and International Masters free (but a $60 entry fee deducted from prizes over $100).
$70 for ‘A’ and ‘B’ tournaments.
$60 for ‘C’ and ‘D’ tournaments.
Discount $10 if paid before 1st March 2020.

No entries accepted after Friday 20th March 2020.

Eligibility
Open to all players.
Non-NZL players must have FIDE ID issued by their chess federation.
NZL players without FIDE ID must provide full Date of Birth.
Format
Four 6 round Swiss tournaments, NZCF & FIDE Rapid rated where possible.
Time Control
25 minutes each player plus 5 seconds increment per move from move one.
