2022 Arie Nijman Memorial
2022 Arie Nijman Memorial is a chess tournament held from Friday 13th May to Sunday 15th May 2022 at the Canterbury Chess Club. Held in memory of the late Arie Nijman, a long time stalward of chess in Canterbury and New Zealand.
COVID-19 Policy
COVID-19 Protection Framework (Traffic Lights) for Christchurch must be at Orange or Green for this event to proceed. Vaccine Pass REQUIRED.
Unwell Players and Spectators:
Players should not enter or attend if they are or become unwell and should inform an Arbiter of non-attendance as soon as practical. Players who are disturbing other players e.g. with repeated sniffling, coughing, sneezing may be subject to the penalties outlined in the Laws of Chess. Spectators may be expelled and/or banned from the venue.
COVID-19 Precautions:
Players should not enter or attend if they are awaiting the results of a Covid test, have been asked to isolate, have one or more Covid symptoms, have Covid, or are not willing to follow requirements of Covid legislation e.g. vaccine passes and QR scanning. Where the Chief Arbiter believes that any of these apply, the Chief Arbiter may declare the game lost or exclude the player from one or more rounds. If a player is excluded pending a Covid test, one half-point bye may apply at the discretion of the Chief Arbiter. If a player refuses to follow arbiter direction on these, they may be expelled from the tournament. Spectators may be expelled and/or banned from the venue.
Covid Hygiene:
- Hand sanitiser will be provided – clean hands frequently using hand sanitiser if hands are not visibly soiled, or soap and water when hands are visibly soiled.
- If coughing or sneezing, cover nose and mouth with flexed elbow or paper tissue, dispose of tissue immediately after use and cleanse your hands. Refrain from touching your face until you have thoroughly washed your hands.
- Masks are recommended but not required to be worn.
- Handshakes before and/or after the game are not required.
- Equipment will be sanitised between rounds.
- If necessary, restrictions may be placed on numbers of spectators in the playing venue and numbers of people in particular areas within the playing venue.
CVC Compliance:
In line with current NZCF and Canterbury Chess Club policy, the Arie Nijman Memorial is CVC-compliant. This means all attendees including players, arbiters and spectators must provide a valid vaccine pass, temporary exemption from the Ministry of Health, or be under the age of 12 years 3 months.

$50 per player.
$40 for unwaged / retirees / students / juniors.

New Zealand chess players who participate in 2 or more NZCF rated events in a year must be a member of a chess club that is affiliated or associated with NZCF (New Zealand Chess Federation). The Mount Maunganui RSA Chess Club offers memberships that fulfill this requirement from just $10.

Eligibility
Open to all players.
Non-NZL players must have FIDE ID issued by their chess federation.
NZL players without FIDE ID must provide full Date of Birth.
Only first 32 player entries accepted due to space constraints.
Format
6 round Swiss tournament, NZCF & FIDE rated where possible.
Time Controls
90 minutes each player plus 30 seconds increment per move from move one.

Players who have not registered by 6.30pm may not be paired for round 1. Players should register in person where possible or by sending a text message to the organiser +64 21 1289543.
Prize giving would be after completion of Round 6 at approximately 6pm Sunday 9th May.
Half point Byes
Players may take a half point bye in any of the first four rounds. Maximum 1 half point bye per player.
Please advise about taking half point bye when entering.

- No player may claim more than one prize.
